Maybe you’ve felt it lately, that quiet longing for more peace, calm and rest. Perhaps your body feels tense, your thoughts are racing, or your sleep has been restless. These are not just signs of a busy life. They’re messages from your nervous system, telling you it’s overwhelmed and craving support.
Many of us carry the weight of past experiences, sometimes painful or traumatic, that we might not even fully recognise. Those hidden layers can keep the nervous system on edge, holding tension and stress beneath the surface. When this happens, simply trying to push through or distract ourselves rarely brings lasting relief.
That’s where shamanic drumming has been so powerful for me, and for many others I’ve worked with. It’s a practice that speaks gently to both the body and the soul, offering support on many levels. It helps calm the nervous system, while also opening a doorway to deeper inner healing in a way that feels safe and held.

Rhythm as Regulation
At its most basic, the steady beat of the drum is incredibly grounding. Our brains naturally respond to repetitive rhythms, and shamanic drumming usually happens at a pace, about four to seven beats per second, that helps guide us into what is scientifically known as a theta brain wave state. This is the space of deep meditation – which in shamanic terms is called trance – , but also creativity and intuitive insight.
As you settle into the drum’s rhythm, your nervous system can start to shift out of fight-or-flight mode and into rest and repair. The body relaxes, the mind slows, and a feeling of presence and calm begins to take root.
But this calming is really just the beginning.

Crossing into the Inner Realms
Once we’re held in this meditative rhythm, something else starts to happen. With the mind quiet and the body safe, we become more open to what lies beneath everyday awareness.
The drumbeat becomes a bridge, not just between brain hemispheres but between the physical world and the world of spirit. It gently carries us inward, into a kind of waking dream where we might meet spirit allies, ancestors, animal guides or parts of ourselves waiting to be seen and liberated.
This is the shamanic journey, a deeply personal and spiritual exploration of the soul’s landscape. It’s not about forcing anything to surface or unlocking trauma abruptly. Instead, it’s about creating a space where what’s ready to come forward can do so gently, in its own time, within a safe and supportive container.

A Ceremonial Space Is A Safe Space
It’s interesting how drumming in a ceremonial way prepares the physical body through the nervous system to allow the journeying of the soul. Once the physiological process takes place, with your nervous system calming and your brain waves shifting, the spiritual experience is invited: the ceremony, the journey, the connection with unseen wisdom.
When ceremony is held with skill and care, it becomes a space where even deep, old wounds can begin to soften. Emotions or memories that may have felt stuck or hidden come up gently and safely, offering the possibility of healing, not because we’re forcing it, but because the conditions are right.
I’ve seen again and again how this work creates space for healing, not by pushing too hard but by holding presence. When guided by a skilled practitioner, the drumming journey is a safe container where even the most deeply buried parts of ourselves can start to come into the light gently.
This is where inner healing becomes possible. Not as a promise that everything will be resolved immediately, but as a pathway, one that honours the wisdom of your body, the language of your soul and the guidance of the spirits.

Integration: Bringing the Journey Home
After a journey, it’s important to take time to integrate, to reflect, rest, move or simply be with whatever came up. This is how the insights and healing truly take root in everyday life.
Shamanic drumming isn’t a quick fix or something to rush. It’s a living practice that invites you to listen to your body, your soul and the rhythms that surround you. When you do, you can slowly come back into your own natural rhythm, calm, connected and awake to the deeper parts of who you are.
If you feel called to explore this journey in a way that’s gentle and personalised, I offer individual sessions guided by shamanic principles, including drumming journeys to the Four Worlds and soul retrieval work. These sessions provide a safe container for your own pace of inner exploration and healing.

I’m also holding a group drumming ceremony on 17th May in Brussels, a beautiful opportunity to experience the rhythm together and step into deep meditation and connection. You can find all the details here: https://justinspiring.org/upcoming-drum-meditation/.
If you’re curious or feel called, I’d be honoured to walk with you on that path.
