When we set out to create change in our lives – whether it’s starting a new practice, deepening our self-awareness, or following a spiritual path – we often rely on either motivation or discipline. But what is the difference between the two, and which one truly supports us in the long run?
Motivation is that spark of inspiration, the feeling that moves us to take action. It comes when we feel excited about a new idea, a goal, or a deeper calling. For example, after attending a powerful shamanic journey, you will probably feel deeply inspired to meditate daily or reconnect with nature. But as many of us have experienced, motivation is fleeting; it comes and goes, influenced by emotions, circumstances, and energy levels.

Discipline, on the other hand, is the steady force that keeps us going even when motivation fades. It’s the decision to commit to something despite how we feel in the moment. Think of a practitioner who wakes up early every morning to practise energy work, even on days when they feel tired or uninspired. Or a musician, who doesn’t wait for inspiration to practise – they play every day, knowing that consistency is what leads to true mastery. Without discipline, even the most talented artist would struggle to develop their full potential.
However, discipline without motivation can become rigid and exhausting. If we force ourselves into strict routines without connection to why we’re doing them, we risk feeling drained or disconnected from our purpose. A person who meditates every day just to “tick it off the list” might miss the true depth of the practice. Discipline alone is not enough; we need a sense of meaning to sustain our efforts.

The key is balance. Motivation brings enthusiasm and vision, while discipline ensures commitment and follow-through. When the two work together, they create a rhythm that supports growth. For example, if your motivation to meditate fades, discipline can guide you to sit anyway – and often, once you begin, the experience itself rekindles inspiration.
In the end, we don’t need to choose between motivation and discipline. Instead, we can cultivate both: allowing motivation to guide us and discipline to keep us going. By honouring the natural flow between the two, we create a path that is both committed and alive, structured yet open to change.
